5 Ways to Fix Facebook Messenger Notification Won’t Go Away

Quick Tips
  • Ensure there are no unread messages in the Message Requests and Archived Messages folders.
  • Disabling and re-enabling notification permissions for the Messenger app can also help fix this issue.
  • If the problem persists, consider updating the Messenger app and clearing its cache data.

Try Basic Fixes

  • Mark your messages as read: At times, Facebook Messenger may sometimes fail to mark your messages as read, even after you have opened them. To fix this, you can mark your messages as read manually by long-pressing the conversation and selecting the Mark as read option.
  • Update the app: If the Facebook Messenger notification isn’t going away due to a bug within the app, it shouldn’t take long for Meta to address and resolve the issue in a subsequent update. Head to the Play Store (Android) or App Store (iPhone) on your phone to update the Messenger app and see if that helps.

Fix 1: Turn Off Message Reminders

When you enable message reminders in Messenger, the app occasionally sends notifications about unread messages. As a result, a Messenger notification may reappear even after you dismiss it. To avoid any confusion, it’s best to disable message reminders in the Messenger app.

Step 1: Open the Messenger app on your phone, tap the hamburger menu icon in the top-left corner, and then tap the gear icon in the top-right corner.

Step 2: Tap on Notifications & sounds and disable the toggle next to Message reminders.

Fix 2: Check Message Requests and Archived Messages

If Facebook Messenger displays a notification but there are no new messages, it could be due to pending message requests or unread archived messages. Here’s how you can mark them as read.

Step 1: Open the Messenger app on your phone, tap the hamburger menu icon in the top-left corner, and select Message requests.

Step 2: Long-press on the unread conversation and select Mark as read.

Step 3: Tap the menu icon again and select Archive. Open your unread conversations one by one to mark them as read.

Fix 3: Disable and Re-Enable Notifications for the Messenger App

If the notification is still not going away, you can resolve the problem by disabling and re-enabling notifications for the Facebook Messenger app. Here’s how.

Android

Step 1: Tap and hold the Messenger app icon and tap the info icon from the menu that pops up.

Step 2: On the app info page, tap on Notifications. Disable the toggle next to Allow notifications and then enable it.

iPhone

Step 1: Open Settings and scroll down to tap on Messenger.

Step 2: Select Notifications and toggle off the switch next to Allow Notifications. Wait for a few seconds and turn it back on.

Fix 4: Sign Out and Sign Back In

The Messenger app could misbehave and trouble you with such issues if your account has a problem. You can remove your account from the app and add it back to see if that works.

Step 1: Open the Messenger app settings menu and tap See more in Account Center option.

Step 2: Go to Password and security > Where you’re logged in.

Step 3: Tap on Select devices to log out. Then, select your device from the list and tap the Log Out button at the bottom.

Sign back into the Messenger app and check if the issue persists.

Fix 5: Clear App Cache (Android)

Interference from a corrupt or outdated app cache can cause Messenger to malfunction on your Android. You can purge the existing app cache to resolve the problem.

Step 1: Long-press on the Messenger app icon and tap the info icon from the menu that appears.

Step 2: Go to Storage and tap the Clear cache option at the bottom-right corner.
